The degree programme and the degree in view is a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology).
Microbiology as a discipline is practical and is one of the most diverse areas of bioscientific and biotechnological studies. Several sub-disciplines including Environmental, Food, Industrial, Medical, and Petroleum Microbiology are of immense benefit to humanity. Consequently, these areas have generated considerable research and practical interest globally.
In Nigeria, microbiology has been employed in various establishments. Specifically, the knowledge of microbiology has benefited the petrochemical establishments, food manufacturing/processing industries, government regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as medical service outfits in the immediate environment and in the country at large.
The Department emphasizes the concept of relevant broad-based training comprising biological, chemical, and physical sciences as well as arts. The knowledge imparted is to produce graduates who will be of service to academia, food and agricultural industries, breweries, medical/pharmaceutical establishments, oil/gas industries.
The Department of Microbiology of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli was established in 2001 and named Anambra state University then, in 2014 the name was changed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.
To produce graduates of high quality standing who could fit into industries, hospitals, environmental establishments, academic institutions and research institutes at both national and international levels.
Our vision is to make our Department one of the best microbiology Departments in Nigeria by the year 2025 in terms of the quality of students, graduates and staff through quality teaching and research.
The programme was designed to provide a sound understanding of microorganisms in relation to mankind and the environment. The programme will elaborate the importance of microorganisms in industry, health and environmental sectors of the society. The Department of microbiology, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli is planned to be at the forefront of teaching and learning, research and development, knowledge creation and dissemination in the field of microbiology. It is expected that our students will have a good grounding in the principles, theories, methods, techniques in all areas of microbiology. The department is aware of the relevance of the basic science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics to study, understanding and practice of microbiology, hence these subjects have been made mandatory to be taken by 100 and 200 level students. Provision is also made for capacity and competence building of our students through the introduction of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
